Andrew seems to have this covered I would also add, submitting your website to some niche directories Dmoz is a must. If you have your blog on your domain this will help strengthen your website through good newly added content.

Check this forums blog to read an article on directory submissions. I plan to write more so keep your eye out for more information to help you improve your site in the search engines. Just haven’t had time lately as we are so busy with clients at the moment hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help and advice and for the birthday wishes on the word association thread but everything is on hold just now for a family bereavement.

Just a wee update. I think I have managed to resolve the domain thingy. When I added the page through my programme dreamweaver it dissappeared but when I type in the 2 different ways to get to my site it seems to work.

Thanks for the update Diana

Doesn't look like it has worked though I'm afraid. Both versions are still showing.

It's not because the file disappeared in Dreamweaver - that's simply because the htaccess file is hidden by default on most servers....

oh well.....will have a wee play around with it again some time. I'm finding that trying to get the motivation to sort the website in general is really just not there.

Ok this morning I decided to work on my website a little. I am trying to update the stuff on my wire wrapped jewellery page and I discovered that I had my website save on two different locations. One location was within the dreamweaver programme and the other place was within My Documents. My root folder is in My Documents but for some obscure reason I managed to save the htaccess file to the dreamweaver version of my website. I have now deleted the second lot of files relating to my website and the htaccess file has been uploaded and I think it is working as it should this time.

cool advice. I don't know much about SEO but the H1 stuff makes sense (my own site is all H2 and H3 - bleh, Ill sort that out. additionally, I really had no idea that it was best to limit to www or non-www (I have both, just because I'm none the wiser, but that will change too)

Anyway, that's the sort of advice people can be doing with.
Cheers

Like Andrew says a blog only is not good for SEO but having a blog under your own domain or as a subdomain is as adding new fresh relevant content on your own domain is the best way over time to climb rankings.
Enjoy your weekends

Sorry for not having spotted this earlier Diana.

You have done well grasshopper It's working exactly as it should now.
