I have to say my gut reaction is it wont work either I am a younger guy (28) so maybe these things just dont appeal to me yet ( I say this not meaning to offend anyone of course). You make some very valid points Colin and I have to agree I do sometimes go out with male only mates just to relax and chill without the women. These occasions are very far between and I dont think I would ever consider going to a Gentlemans club.

Maybe it's just the name but it creates a certain imagery for me that is seedy and I wonder whether that would be an issue for many people. I travel a fair bit as well around the UK and I have to say I have never found myself at bar bored. Invariably it involves very long days and getting back to the hotel simply means a chance to grab a quick bite to eat, planning for the next day and some well earned sleep. This is of course my opinion and I would encourage you to do as much research as possible. I would suggest you keep it away from friends and family as they are always more inclied to support your ideas and not give you a true sense of whether it will actually work.

Keep us all posted as to how things go and you never know I could be eating my words

Sorry for the 12-bore approach. Hopefully though the value of that is a little clearer though. For when it comes to funding and permissions my mild gunning down will seem like a kid with a peashooter.

The big question is then where does the demographic profile rest?

For this to work (and I sincerely hope it does) It'll need a USP; and that will take more than just the novelty of a gym or in-house bordello. For sure, an old-man's snooze club would fail. But what is it people might buy into today? And who exactly are those people???

Anyone got any thoughts???

Forsooth Mr. Hynd; surely you're not suggesting you're one of those uncouth boorish types....

For me at old-enough-to-be Barry's-dad age the things that WOULD appeal would be a sense of ironic camp humour bound with reference to more secure more constant times. Although I've long-since fallen out with them the humour that surrounds this site.... The Sheridan Club and The Chap - MAGAZINE appeal to me greatly......

Thing is all this isn't too far divorced from what my students enjoy.... And the whole field of ironic and post ironic humour is something that crosses at least three generations. I think in these unsettled times too we crave certain certainties and constants.... And as we look back over generations past perhaps we can preserve the best constants.

The thing about this proposal is that it's entirely impractical. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But it is a restrictive thing....

It is clear to me that the Private Members Gentleman's Club concept does not receive very much support. Being a Bird of a feather who tends to only flock with my own kind ( that being a Divorcee of many years now, who lives entirely in a Mans World and free of any shackles and restrictions) I mostly encounter other men who love the idea, but within the population as a whole we may represent 5% who think that way. Even the enthused may not bother turning up very often. I would like it to succeed but I'm not looking for a battle I can't win. I work to earn money, and if one method of doing it doesn't work I find something else. I'm definaitely not going to recommend to anyone that they waste their money investing in something that is doomed from the beginning. It shouldn't be a fact that just because a man is under 30 years old he cannot regard himself as a Gentleman, but I know that is the way younger guys think. The word Gentleman does not have to mean ''Old Man'' I also suspect that many men would not be brave enough to go into a Gentleman's Club even if they wanted to, for fear of receiving a handbagging from wife or girlfriend, who most likely would not approve. I thought it would be difficult in Perth, due to a fairly small population. However I thought diversification would give the club a good chance. One thing is certain though and that is the club WOULD be called a ''Private Members Gentleman's Club'' and they seem to be the offending words. As that is the case it's probably better that the Company has a rethink as to what to do with their building. I will, with a great deal of regret deliver my recommendations tomorrow to the company and see what the response is. There has been many bright ideas come and go in Perth. They have all been started with the best will to provide services found in larger Cities to people in Perth whether they be local or visitors. They never receive enough support to succeed. I imagine this venture will go the same way.

Colin,

I wouldn't be arriving at the conclusion that this project isn't going to work just because a few people on here dont think it's a good idea. I think it's only fair to highlight that the project may have some initial challenges but that's not to say they cant be overcome.

The demographic is small and I dont think anyone will disagree with that. I also think a project like this will need significant investment so I think the business plan needs properly thought through before anyone sinks any funds into it.

Colin ol' bean; you're focusing on the threat and failing to see the opportunity...

The USP here HAS to be the humour; the absurdity of it all.......

DO the legwork ol' son. Research absurdities like "The Chap" and "The Sheridan" and consider why they work and who they appeal to. Ya wanna do Divorcee? Hey! My lawyer's given me a loyalty card!

Like I say; you've gotta NAIL the demographic.. It does exist I'm surel it's the what it is and how it works that's the problem....

Yes OK will do that. I think the company's idea is to do a direct import from what they have experienced whilst the owners have been in London. They have a dream to bring it home with them because Perth is home. They are local to Perth and I am not and yet it is me who seems to realize that the Gentlemans Club is a very small market requiring an area with a dense population to draw in enough members. I've never been convinced that will work and I'm even less convinced now. What you mean is that far more research is required and a need to adapt to the area. Find out who would likely use the club and if so what would be needed to keep them coming back. I do listen to advise even though I don't always like what I'm hearing. I will suggest a big rethink rather than suggesting the project is scrapped

I don't think the project needs abandoned; just contextualised .... You need to take more time!

Colin

If they/you do abandon the concept, get them to think about cheap hostel accommodation for the building.

There has been huge growth in private owned hostels all around Scotland see Scottish Independent Hostels, youth hostel and backpackers accommodation in Scotland

Again much research will be required but I have seen several old buildings transformed into viable hostels in the last several years.

As far as I know Perth does not have any.

Perth does have Hostels for the Homeless which really just doss houses for down and outs. We certainly wouldn't get into that. But for Tourists/Backpackers that is a very good suggestion. For tourists, apart from the coastal roads there is is no other way to the Highlands other than through Perth. It is one advantage that Perth has over most Scottish Towns and Cities is that it is perfectly placed on the road network. Assuming that the kind of Tourists who use Hostels do not do their entire holiday on foot, I guess they must use buses and trains at some point. I myself was a member of the Youth Hostel Association years ago, when I did holidaying in Scotland. As far as I know, like you say, there is none of those type of Hostels in this area.
