Default Business start-ups down 21% in 2009

I've linked to an article below from The Herald which points to a 21% drop in business start-ups during 2009. I for one quite strongly believe that the main part of the recovery will come from our small businesses.

I would accept that the general economy is probably a big factor in people deciding not to go out on their own but i'd like to know other people's thoughts on what other factors may be at play here. Quite interesting that it varies massively around the country as well with some areas seeing good growth.

Default Re: Business start-ups down 21% in 2009

Barry,

I'm very surprised at these stats... Our experience is that there are actually MORE new-starts setting up, amid uncertain times within big industry, with redundancies etc resulting in more people making a go of it themselves...

The herald report says that New-Starts in Glasgow have dropped by 26% - if this is true, then I'm well chuffed - our Glasgow Clients have significantly increased this year, and we're doing more "local" work than ever!..

Like you I believe that economic recory (and ongoing stability) will be driven by small business, ironically, unlike what the banks think, a good small business is far more "secure" than it's bigger counterpart.
